The eight functions
Ne: Extraverted Intuition
"What could be?"
Ne sees what could be: links between things, options, what ifs, and the hidden potential in people and ideas.
What it does
Extraverted Intuition reads possibilities in the outside world. One thing reminds it of ten others, a plan suggests five better ones, a person shows a potential they have not seen yet. Jung described it as always looking for new possibilities in the world, and growing restless as soon as a situation is settled.
It works by expanding. Where Ni narrows everything to one path, Ne keeps every door open, and it is the function of brainstorming, improvisation and quick, playful connections.

- Restlessness, and fear of committing to one path.
- Anxious what ifs that never stop.
The Ne and Si axis
Ne's opposite is Si. Ne looks at what could be; Si remembers what has been. A strong Ne grows by giving its ideas roots in experience and routine; a strong Si grows by letting a little of the new into what it knows.

In the light: the ego
Ideas are your playground. Puns, wild what-ifs and trying something new on a whim make you light up.
Uncertainty is your soft spot. Under stress your mind floods with worst cases you cannot switch off.
In the shadow
Opposing PersonalityINFJ INTJYou
Unasked for ideas and endless options can feel like a threat. When pushed, you shoot down every alternative, or grow suspicious of what others might be planning. Made conscious, it lets you test a plan against what could go another way.
When you feel attacked, the what ifs become weapons: a cold list of everything that could go wrong, or contempt for ideas that seem frivolous. Accepted, it gives you a wise sense of which possibilities truly matter.
Your deepest fear here is chaos: a future with no shape, where anything bad could happen. In the worst moments it fills your mind with disasters and doubts about everything. Met and accepted, it opens a creative freedom you never had.
