The Journey Within

Typology mixes ideas from many authors, and they do not always agree. Every idea in this book carries a small label saying whose it is, so you always know what you are reading.

A label like Beebe means the idea is the author's own. MazWiz reading marks our own reading, where we join ideas that their authors did not join themselves. Those are a lens, not a finding.

Jung

Carl Gustav Jung

Swiss psychiatrist who described the two attitudes (introverted, extraverted) and the functions that became the eight we use today, and the ideas of the ego, the shadow, the anima and individuation.

Myers

Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs

Turned Jung's types into the four letters and the 16 types, and the questionnaire known as the MBTI.

Keirsey

David Keirsey

Grouped the 16 types into four temperaments by their core needs, the NF, NT, SJ and SP groups the DTI test also uses.

Grant

W. Harold Grant

Gave each type an order of four functions, with the attitudes alternating, and the ages at which each one tends to develop.

Beebe

John Beebe

Jungian analyst who gave all eight functions of a type a seat and an archetype: the Hero, Parent, Child and Anima or Animus in the light, and the Opposing Personality, Senex or Witch, Trickster and Demon or Daimon in the shadow.

Quenk

Naomi L. Quenk

Described how the weakest function takes over under heavy stress: being "in the grip".

Personality Hacker

Antonia Dodge and Joel Mark Witt (Personality Hacker)

Named the loop: when the first function leans on the third and skips the second.

CS Joseph

CS Joseph

Built on Beebe's eight seats: the four sides of the mind (each person carries four types), and the relationship pairs between types.

Socionics

Aushra Augustinavichiute and Socionics

A theory of type and relationships founded in Lithuania in the 1970s, from Jung's types. It gave the name duality to the pairs of types that complete each other.

Campbell

Joseph Campbell

Found one pattern under the myths of the world, the hero's journey: a departure, an initiation and a return.

Vogler

Christopher Vogler

Retold Campbell's journey in 12 stages for storytellers.

MazWiz reading

This book

Our own reading, where we join ideas that their authors did not join themselves, such as Campbell's stages placed on Beebe's eight seats. Read these as a lens, not as a finding.
